The West Side Junior Men 4-, representing the USA, took 3rd in the B Final, which gave them 9th overall at the FISA World Junior Rowing Championships in Brive-la-Gaillarde, France. Rowing for the USA were Kosta Gioulekas, a recent graduate of City Honors Crew, Allan Amico and Ronald Rubino (both from Canisius High School) and Sean Johnston from Detroit. The B Final was very close, with the top 3 boats separated by just 1.5 seconds, and with the Czech Republic beating out the USA by 0.02 seconds. Click here to see the amazing photofinish. Gold was won by Great Britain. The West Side crew was profiled in the Buffalo News on August 2, 2009. Spring Season Ends at Canadian NationalsCity Honors Senior Men's Four+ (Eric, Kosta, Matt, Steve, and Atley) was one of just 12 boats in a 32-boat field that qualified for semi-finals at the Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Association championships in St. Catharines on Friday, May 29, 2009. In a close semi-final on Saturday, they were eliminated from competition and our season is done. Also competing in St. Catharines were the Senior Women 63kg Eight (Olivia, Niamh, Misty, Leah S, Lauren, Jordan, Alex, Indica, and Chelsea ) and the Junior Women 63kg Four+ (Olivia, Niamh, Lauren, Leah S, and Zoey). Complete results are on the CSSRA website. We had a special treat in seeing former City Honors rower Hannah Miller-Selzer qualify for finals in a Senior Women's Four+ out of Colonel By Secondary School near Ottawa, where she now lives. Men's Senior 4+ Takes 5th at NationalsCity Honors Men's Senior 4+ (Eric, Kosta, Matt, Steve, and Atley) fought to 5th place in the finals of the Scholastic Nationals Regatta at Mercer Lake, New Jersey, on Saturday, May 23, 2009. They made the final with thrilling sprints in the last 500 meters in two successive races--repechage on Friday and semifinals on Saturday. Given one more meter of water in the final, their sprint would have given them 4th place--they were just 0.3 seconds behind Saratoga. The race was won by the New York State champ, Manhasset, followed by Woodbridge of Virginia, and Bonner of Pennsylvania. In 6th was St. Mary's Prep of Michigan. Senior Men Pair Medals in WellandCity Honors' Senior Men Pair (Matt and Steve) took 3rd place at the South Niagara Rowing Club High School Regatta in Welland, Ontario, on Sunday, May 17. Their boat was one of two City Honors boats to reach the finals. The other was the Senior Men Four with Coxswain (Eric, Kosta, Justin, Zach, and Atley). All of our high school rowers participated in the 2-day regatta; most competed in more than one event. See the SNRC website for all of the results. Boys Senior 4+ to Nationals!City Honors has a small and a young crew compared with most of the schools and clubs at the New York Scholastic Rowing Championships, but we are very competitive with the big guys. City Honors Boys Senior 4+ (Eric, Kosta, Matt, Steve, and Atley) posted the second fastest time in the time trials on Saturday May 9 and won their semi-final convincingly on Sunday morning May 10, 2009. In the final, they were nosed out of 3rd at the finish line by the boat from Saratoga Rowing Association. The top 5 scholastic boats that category qualify for Scholastic Nationals, so they are going to Mercer Lake on Memorial Day weekend. Our Girls' Freshman 8 (Nicci, Leah, Anna, Olivia, Gabby, Leah, Megan, Niamh, and Nadine) took second in their heat and advanced to the final. Although the final could not be held on Sunday, the girls were invited to nationals via petition based on their time in the heat. Alas, rules for the national regatta (unlike New York) forbid having 8th graders in a freshman boat, and we have three 8th graders in that crew. Too bad for this year, but the future is bright! The weather wreaked havoc on the races late Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday. Races were suspended by lightning and then by a downpour at about dinnertime on Saturday. Racing resumed with a big rainbow, but the sun went down before all of the planned Saturday races could be run. A cold wind was major factor in all Sunday races. The racing schedule was reorganized so that the senior and junior races could be finished in the morning. Novice and freshman finals were rescheduled for Sunday afternoon, but the regatta was canceled at 2 pm, before those finals were run. For those categories, medals were awarded based on times in the Saturday races, and, in some cases, on results of Sunday morning semi-finals. Our Girls' Junior 4+ (Indica, Kelsey, Jordan, Lauren, and Zoey) did well in their time trial on Saturday and advanced to the semi. They looked strong in the semi, but missed making the final. The Boys' Freshman 8 (Dylan, Will, Joe, Austin, Tomasz, David, Chris, Chuck, and Emmett) was third in their heat and advanced to the final, which was not held because of the wind. The Girls' Senior Quad (Misty, Alex, Madeleine, and Clemmie) took 5th in their final; two boats ahead of them were club boats, so our girls earned 3rd place in the scholastic category. Some of our rowers got valuable experience in time trials and heats even though they did not advance to the semi-finals. These included our Girls' Novice 8 (Claire, Eliza, Paige, Elise, Carolyn, Annina, Marina, Savanah, and Meegan), the Boys' Junior Quad (Dillon, Mike, Devin, and Tyler), and the Boys' Senior Double (Zach and Justin). Complete results from the NYS Scholastic Championship Regatta on May 9-10 are attached and can be found on Regatta Central. Beautiful Day at the BennettOn an unusually gorgeous spring day in Buffalo, West Side Rowing Club hosted the annual John Bennett Regatta. In competition with crews from Ontario, Rochester, and Buffalo, City Honors boats made finals in two events on May 4: the Men's Senior 4+ (Eric, Kosta, Matt, Steve, and Atley) and the Women's Senior 4+ (Clemmie, Alex, Misty, Madeleine, and Chelsea). Our big freshman/novice team looked strong, with two entries in the Frosh/Novice Women's 8 race, and with additional entries in the Men's Frosh/Novice 4+ and the Men's Frosh/Novice 8. See the article in the Buffalo News for a synopsis of the regatta.
