Senior Quad Starts Fall at Lift Bridge RegattaOur senior men's quad (Eric, Clif, Zach, and Justin) started the fall regatta season on a misty cold Sunday (September 21) at the Lift Bridge Regatta in Fairport, NY. The quad was third behind McQuaid Jesuit HS and Rochester Institute of Technology with a time of 0:22:08.90 minutes on the curvy Erie Canal in the Mens HS / Masters / Open 4x event. Rowing in the RIT boat was Stu Burgess, a 2007 graduate of City Honors Crew. Coach Dan's boat, coxied by Atley, won the Mens Masters / Open 4+ event beating crews from RIT and Chautauqua Lake with an adjusted time of 0:20:30.97 minutes. The regatta was the first of the fall season for many crews. In the head race format, boats set off at 10-second intervals, racing against the clock over a over the 5,500-meter (3.4-mile) course to the finish line just west of the Lift Bridge in Fairport. Beautiful GeneseeThe Head of the Genesee on October 11, 2008, was held on a gorgeous warm fall Saturday at Genesee Valley Park, which is a Frederick Law Olmsted-designed park with huge trees and three intersecting waterways: Red Creek, the Genesee River, and the Erie Canal. We had three 4+s and an 8+ compete on the Genesee River. One men's 4+ (Eric, Matt Y, Zach, Justin, and Atley) and the women's 4+ (Kayla, Alex, Madeleine, Misty, and Chelsea) finished in the middle of the pack. This about right for us at this time of year, according to Coach Dan. Fall is the time for technique and team building. Our new varsity rowers got their first experience at head racing. The new men's 4+ included Chuck, Chris, Dylan, Tyler, and Phil. Our new varsity women, Katie and Olivia, rowed in the women's 8+ with Kayla, Alex, Madeleine, Misty, Leah, Melika, and Chelsea. Complete results of the races can be found on Regatta Central. Men's Quad Takes 3rd at Head of the FishAt the Head of the Fish regatta on Saturday, October 25, 2008, City Honors took 3rd in the Men's Junior Modified 4x/+ with a time of 13:57:17 minutes Congratulations to Tyler, Phil, Dylan, and Chuck! Complete results of the regatta can be found at RaceTrak. On a damp (no surprise there) and gloomy day, the team watched the races from a tent site right on the water. As Coach Dan said, it was like sitting in your living room watching high-def TV. With blankets, sleeping bags, winter jackets, hot chocolate, and pots of hot soup and chili, everyone kept warm. Luckily, the high winds and downpour held off until the early evening. And the snow didn't arrive until Monday or Tuesday after we were safely back in Buffalo. We had a variety of interesting combinations in the Fish. The Women's Junior Lightweight 4+ (Chelsea, Leah, Misty, Lauren, and Olivia) raced in a field of 23 boats and came in just ahead of Holy Angels. The Men's Junior 4+ (Atley, Eric, Chris, Clif, and Matt Y) rowed against 52 boats and had a time of 12:24:53. Justin and Zach rowed in the Men's Junior Lightweight 2x, Kayla and Clemmie rowed in the Women's Juniors 2x, and Leah and Misty were in the Women's Junior Lightweight 2x. Finally, we had two Women's Junior 4+ boats in a field of 48--Rebecca, Melika, Katie, Lauren, and Olivia in one boat and Chelsea, Clemmie, Kayla, Madeleine, and Alex E in the other. All 23 members of the varsity team rowed in at least one race. Novices Look Strong in Hogan-Fries RegattaOur novice girls did a great job in the Hogan-Fries regatta in Buffalo on November 1, 2008. All three boats finished second in their races. Our novices were cheered on by Coach Ted B, who braved the wrath of his doctor to come to the regatta on his 2-week-old bionic knee. The girls 4+ (Zoey, Jordan, Elise, Kelsey, and Nicci) looked especially strong in their race against Nardin and the winner, West Side. The 8+ B boat (Meegan, Jordan, Carolline, Marina, Claire, Eliza, Vicky, Leah G, and Paige) were second to Holy Angels, and the girls 8+ A boat (Nadine, Niamh, Elise, Kelsey, Megan, Anna, Gabby, Leah H, and Annina) rowed hard as the wind gusted at the end of the regatta. Our boys 8+ (Emmett, Devin, Mike, Austin, Dave, Tomasz, Will, Dillon, and Joe) did not have as much water time as the coaches had hoped this fall, but they came together at the green buoy and had a strong finish in their race against Canisius and St. Joe's. Coach Ted Clark said afterwards that the coaches could not be happier with the progress they witnessed from September to November. All of the crews put together their best effort. The coaches learned a lot from the races and now have a starting point for preparing the crew for spring races. Practice in spring will be tough, and they will focus efforts on boat speed and endurance, Head of the Niagara CanceledAfter a gorgeous week of warm and sunny weather, the rains came and the winds blew on Saturday, November 8, 2008, causing the Head of the Niagara to be canceled. Our fall season is over. |
